Privacy
This page describes what this site actually does. It is written against the running system, not against an intention.
What we collect, and only when you ask us to
This site collects nothing about you unless you submit one of two forms. There is no account, no login, and no tracking of what you read.
- Ebook and audiobook notification. Your email address, and your name if you give one.
- Reading Room notification. Your email address, and your name if you give one.
These are two separate requests. Asking for one does not sign you up for the other, and neither creates a membership, an order, or a payment. Neither form asks for a phone number or a postal address. Buying the book is a separate thing and is described below.
If you buy the book
The buy button takes you to PayPal, and the payment happens entirely on PayPal’s own pages. Your card details are never sent to this site and are never stored here. PayPal handles your payment under its own privacy policy, which you can read before you pay.
Once a payment completes, PayPal sends us the order: your name, your email address, your shipping address, what you bought and what you paid. We keep that as your customer record, because James cannot post a book without knowing where it goes, and because he needs to be able to answer you if you write about your order.
We hold that record for as long as James may need it to deal with your order — a replacement, a refund, or a question months later. You can ask us to delete it at any time and we will, except where we are required to keep a record of the sale itself for tax purposes.
Buying does not subscribe you to anything. We do not send marketing to someone because they bought a book, and we do not sell, rent or share your details.
The tether map sends nothing
The seven-question reflection runs entirely in your browser. Your answers stay in the page while it is open, are never written to your device, and are never transmitted. Closing the tab discards them. There is no identity step and no way to save a result.
If you separately request a notification, or buy the book, after seeing your result, your answers are not attached to either. They never leave the page.
Ordinary web logs
Like any website, the web server records ordinary request information — the address requested, the time, your IP address and your browser’s user-agent string. This happens for every visitor to every page and is not linked to a contact record.
Cookies and analytics
This site sets no cookies. There is no analytics provider, no advertising pixel, and no third-party script of any kind. The fonts are the ones already on your device, so loading a page does not contact any other company.
Who else handles your information
Your contact details are stored on the server that runs this site. When we send the email you asked for, an email delivery provider handles that message in order to deliver it. Nobody else receives your details, and they are not sold, rented or shared for advertising.
Changing your mind
You can ask us to show you what we hold, correct it, delete it, or stop contacting you, at any time and without giving a reason. Every email we send you will also include a way to unsubscribe. See Contact.
What is not settled yet
We would rather say this than invent it: a specific retention period for notification requests has not been set, and this page will be updated with it before the first notification is sent. Until then, requests are kept only in order to send the message you asked for.
